Mama's Empanadas is a no-frills Colombian spot tucked into Astoria’s bustling Steinway Street, known for its impressive variety of empanadas and other traditional Colombian fare. This is the kind of place where locals and visitors alike come looking for a quick, satisfying bite with authentic flavors that aren’t watered down for the casual eater.

The atmosphere here is informal and lively, with a steady flow of customers ordering at the counter before grabbing a seat at the simple tables inside. Don’t be surprised if there’s a wait during lunch or early evening, especially on weekends—the turnover is fairly quick, but the line reflects just how popular the empanadas are around these parts.

Mama's is best suited for those craving a taste of Colombian street food in a straightforward setting. The empanadas come in a wide range of fillings—meat lovers can dive into beef, chicken, or chorizo options, while vegetarians will appreciate the thought given to black bean, spinach & cheese, and even mac and cheese varieties. The baked wheat empanada with spinach and cheese, served with a tangy green sauce, stands out as a favorite for something lighter and less greasy.

Beyond empanadas, the menu features homemade sides and mains like grilled meats with rice and beans, and a rotating “soup of the day” that reflects traditional Colombian comfort foods. Pairing your meal with the passionfruit sangria or a fresh juice hit adds a refreshing balance to the mostly savory and fried offerings.

Visitors will find the staff friendly and helpful, which helps navigate the extensive menu of over 50 empanada options. This flexibility means you can easily piece together a casual meal with a mix of flavors, ideal for sharing or sampling several varieties. Seating is limited but functional, making it a comfortable stop whether you’re grabbing lunch solo or with friends looking to try authentic Colombian snacks without fuss.

The best time to visit tends to be just before or after the midday rush, especially if you want to avoid a line and enjoy a relaxed meal. Locals appreciate Mama’s for a dependable, flavorful quick bite, often swinging by to pick up empanadas to take home or eat on the go. If you’re exploring Astoria and want a straightforward introduction to Colombian street eats, Mama’s Empanadas fits the bill with an earnest, no-nonsense approach to what could otherwise be considered simple comfort food.

Perfect spot to grab a quick bite. My favorite empanada is the baked wheat spinach & cheese one. So yummy with the salsa verde.

Very friendly staff. Very delicious empanadas. They have over 50 different ones you can order. I had the spinach cheese one & pizza empanada. Both were delicious. I'll definitely be back to try some more.

This is my favorite empanada spot, highly recommend going in person and plan to leave a chunk of time. Sometimes it could be very busy, but definitely worth the weight. The traditional beef and potato empanada with the green sauce is out of this world would highly recommend also all their other empanadas are very good too. Staff is super friendly. There are dining tables there that you order at the counter, then take your food to eat there or you can take it to go. They also do catering! Another bonus is that they’re open till 2 AM

The best empanadas that I’ve gotten are from here. This time I got the Guava and Cheese and indeed it was the best choice. Staff was nice and kind. The wait time wasn’t too long as well!

I have been thinking about these empanadas since I got them…the feelings are flavorful and gooey, the outsides crisp and fried. As a vegetarian, I appreciated that they had quite a few options to choose from without meat. Our favorites were the black beans and cheese, pizza, Mac and cheese, and mushroom!!

This place is pretty good for a fast food restaurant! It's open late, it's cheap, and you don't wait too long for your food. I also appreciate all of the options that the big menu has, it allows people with dietary limitations to have some more options. The food is not premium stuff but like, what would anyone expect for a quick and easy fast food joint? My favorites are the papa rellena and yuca rellena. Thanks for doing what you do guys
